COMPREHENDING THE INCOMPREHENSIBLE GOD

Infinity
God is infinity. Infinity is beyond my understanding. I do know that the symbol for infinity looks like the number eight sideways. Apparently "eight is enough!"† Mathematically speaking, I realize that no matter how large a number may be, it is still infinitely smaller than infinity! I don't get it, but still I put my faith in the truth of an infinite God.

Personality :-)
God is personality. How can I know or be known by infinity? If God is truly boundless in every sense of the word, how can finite beings relate to him? Personality (possessing unique characteristics and temperaments) helps to explain this. There's a common point between the Almighty and me: We're both persons!

So, my simple definition of God is, "Infinity with Personality."

I still fall short to understand, and probably will until I see Him face to face! The Word of God gives some interesting analogies to help mere mortals grapple with the the concept of its creator. God's Word sometimes describes Him with human attributes, sometimes animal attributes, sometimes plant-like attributes, and sometimes mineral-like attributes.

Human
"I have loved you with an everlasting love..." Jeremiah 31:3

Animal
"He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge..." Psalm 91:4

Vegetable
"I am the vine..." John 15:5 (Jesus said this, but he is one with the Father and therefore, God)

Mineral
"The LORD is my rock..." Psalm 18:2

Energy
"...our God is a consuming fire..." Hebrews 12:29

The Father has these different attributes, as well as the Son. Even the Holy Spirit can be grieved as a person, or quenched as a fire! So, God is a person, but not just a person. He’s more than a person. He has more characteristics than any human, and it takes all the examples, comparisons and analogies that we can find just to start understanding who and what God is!

God can do whatever he wants to do. Don’t ever say, "you can’t do this with God," or, "God can’t do that." I know, "God can't lie," and about 4-5 other such statements. Those are things he chooses not to be able to do. Someone said, "If God can do anything, can he make a rock so big that he can't lift it?" Well, 2,000 years ago, there were probably rocks in Israel that were too heavy for Jesus to lift, and he is God, so there you go. On the other hand, he could have lifted them by faith, so, yes and no!

God can be in several places at once. He can speak to billions simultaneously. And he can focus on just you, as though you and God are the only two in the universe. God is amazing!

Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! -Romans 11:33 (NLT)
